Ever since I can remember I have always loved being outside, using my senses to explore nature, and anytime an animal was added to that scenario, well that was just icing on the cake. I have always been keenly aware of the human-animal bond. For 20 years I have been working with students with Visual Impairments and Multiple Special Needs as a Special Educator and an Assistive Technology Specialist. Many of the lessons that I have created for my students had to be multi-sensory in nature to allow my students to "see" the entire picture. This meant thinking outside the box, getting very messy and often times sharing a pet partner into that teachable moment.
It is a dream of mine that I share with a good friend and colleague, Tracey Klein who has also worked for over 20 years with students that are visually impaired and have multiple special needs as an Occupational Therapist (OT.) Tracey and her family are living out their dream on a 10 acre hobby farm where they love and raise a variety of animals including Alpacas.
Together we have been living out this dream one child, one pet partner, and one Animal Assisted Activity at a time. Please check this blog and http://simplefaithfarm.com/ regularly to discover the new adventures we are involved in.
